John King was the only survivor of the main party of the Victorian Exploration Expedition mounted by the Royal Society of Victoria in 1860 with the aim of crossing the Australian continent from south to north. Although the Gulf of Carpentaria was reached, the expedition ended disastrously with the deaths of seven of the party including its leader. John King was found barely alive on 15 September 1861 and was brought back to Melbourne on 28 November 1861.
