Government Gazettes in general contain a vast amount of historical and genealogical information. However they are largely an untapped resource. The few complete runs that are available are usually only found in major libraries. And even for researchers who do have access to these the sheer size and extent of the Gazettes is daunting.
Now that is all changing - with the publication of the gazettes on affordable and searchable form on CD. Tens of thousands of ordinary people and localities, small and large, are mentioned EVERY YEAR in Government Gazettes. But they offer researchers much more than simply names and places. They will help you reconstruct events and circumstances in the life of individuals and communities.
Information such as list following can often be found in most Gazettes: lists of magistrates, intestate estates, unclaimed letters (tens of thousands of Victorian residents usually with their addresses), applicants for patents, appointees to government positions, auctioneers, cemetery and church land trustees, consuls, creation and dissolution of business partnerships, depasturing licences, insolvents, land purchasers, members elected to the Legislative Council, missing persons, municipal councillors, persons owing money to Treasury, persons named in writs to be executed by the Sheriff, petitioners to establish local government, shareholders in companies seeking registration as limited liability companies, and successful tenderers for government business and works to name a few.
The whole of each the gazette is searchable. Search for any word in the text - names, places and more.
This CD set contains high quality scanned images of the whole of each year from 1861-1870, and has been bookmarked for easy navigation. Pages can be searched, browsed, enlarged and printed out if required.
Each year is also available individually
System Requirements: Any computer using Adobe (Acrobat) Reader 4 or later, Adobe Reader 6 or later is recommended for CDs with searchable text
