Following in the tradition commenced with The Anzac Book, Soldiering Ontells the story of the Australian Army during 1942. All stories arecontributed by members of the Australian Army (referenced by their Armynumber) - "prepared in the field in brief hours off duty, often by theflickering light of a hurricane lamp in a blacked-out camp andsometimes within hearing of the front-line guns".
At the timethe forces were engaged in the Middle East and South-West Pacific. To1941's "Egypt, Palestine, Libya, Greece, Crete and Syria must now beadded Ceylon, Malaya, Java, Timor, New Guinea and the NorthernTerritory of Australia".

Thishistory of the Malayan campaign gives a vivid impression of the landfighting . It omits circumstances leading up to the first act of warand finishes at the point where Singapore was surrendered and athousand Allied troops were left armed to maintain order in the city.
Thebook contains many images and sketches, both colour and black andwhite, of personnel, maps and places. It is a valuable resource and agreat read for all interested in military history.
