This is a short history of burials that took place in Ballarat after European settlement. The year 2006 marks the 150th celebration of the official operation of the Ballaarat General Cemeteries.
This book outlines the proud history. The cemeteries not only reflect life's progress, but also that of the community and the society. The cemeteries are significant as continual reminders of life and death from the earliest years of European settlement in the Ballarat district.
In the earlier years burials were performed traditionally, but in 2006 there are many more cremations and memorials taking place. The cemeteries have moved with the times and now accommodate many diverse categories of memorialisation. The Poets Walk is a new section of the cemetery that allow for contemplation and reflection about departed loved ones. Tanderra Gardens, Fountain Gardens, The Moongate and Chinese Gardens, The Book of Rememberance and the Tree of Rememberance, are further examples of innovations carried out by the Trust.
The Ballaarat General Cemeteries Trust has provided for the future and is fortunate to still have land on which to expand and progress. The Trust looks forward to the challenge of planning for the future and taking into account such requirements for change and innovation that the future will bring.
