Some 2500 of Ireland's named shipwrecks were detailed in volume one of Shipwrecks of the Irish Coast. Sufficient new material was uncovered over the last four years to justify a second additional volume which adds 3500 new wreck accounts to those mentioned in the first volume. The work has become a valued source of reference particularly to verify dates for local historians. Latitude and longitude positions are given for some 600 wrecks where they are known. The style follows the format of volume one and extensive dates and references are attached to facilitate further research.
The three maritime counties of Northern Ireland are covered. A special chapter on submarines has been included because of interest in this topic and the many tales of sunken submarines. The final chapters cover diving expeditions to the Lusitania, history and tradition of salvage rights, salvage work in Irish waters and East India ship losses or activity in Ireland. An extensive list of wreck positions is given where they were available. The material will interest scholars and local historians as well as those interested in maritime affairs.
