Scotland's rulers always had a tough challenge ahead of them. Their kingdom may have had ancient roots and traditions but rivalry and unrest were never far away, and Scotland's neighbours Norway and England made life difficult for them. Some of Scotland's Kings and Queens served their nation well, while others sparked discord and even wars. Many of Scotland's heroes owe their legacy to royal actions, including William Wallace, Flora MacDonald and John Knox. But some of the monarchs themselves have become icons of Scottish national romanticism - Robert the Bruce, Bonnie Prince Charlie and possibly Scotland's most tragic ruler, Mary, Queen of Scots.
