Leamington Spa has the rare distinction of the right to use the prefix `Royal', through the grant of a Royal Charter by Queen Victoria in July 1838 when the transformation of the little village of Leamington Priors into a Regency spa town was virtually completed. The 30 years from 1808 had seen the New Town spring up on land north of the Leam and, though many Regency buildings have been altered or destroyed, they still form the core of the modern town. Though no longer dependent upon the mineral waters, Royal Leamington Spa continues to expand.
