The parish registers of the Church of Scotland which are held at New Register House in Edinburgh form the basis for the IGI and OPR Index produced by the Church of the Latter Day Saints and the Indexes on the Internet site, Scots Origins.
Prior to civil registration in 1855, certificates of batism and marriage were legal proof that such events had taken place and so some parish registers of the Church of Scotland record baptisms and marriages which took place in Secession churches. Most entries specify the particular church the couple belonged to, but sometimes the only clue that they were not members of the Church of Scotland lies in the name of the minister who celebrated the marriage or baptised the child.
Most records of baptisms and marriages in the Secession churches, however, are to be found along with the deaths and burials in the kirk session minutes of the Secession churches which are held at the National Archives of Scotland, local archives and in a few cases in museums and libraries. These kirk session minutes contain other useful genealogical material, such as communion rolls, lists of non-communicants, contributors to funds and so on. These have not been included in this booklet. What is included are births, baptisms, proclamations and marriages, deaths and burials and lists of members which are extant.
In 1900, most the Secession churches united to form the United Free Kirk and in 1929, the United Free Kirk united with the Church of Scotland. It has therefore been decided to limit the entries in the following list to 1900.
