People of the Australian High Country
Author: Klaus Hueneke
This is Klaus Hueneke's third history book set in the Snowy Mountains. It follows on the success of Huts of the High Country (the bible) and Kiandra to Kosciusko, a history of long journeys across the mountains. This book is based on nearly 100 interviews with stockmen, bullockies, housewives, graziers, skiers, hermits, dingo trapper, bushwalkers, scientists, saw millers and cave guides.
The stories have minimal editing so the storyteller's unique forms of expression are retained. There are engrossing tales of hazardous brumby chases, felling tall alpine ash, fugitives on the run, cattle dying in blizzards, the first primitive ski tows, as well as poems like The Coolamon Ball, and entries from mountain hut logbooks such as the Rhyme of the Ancient Mountaineer and Once Upon a Rat. Many of the 200 photos haven't been published before and there is an extensive Who's Who with 500 entries.
Klaus is a skier, bushwalker, author, photographer, historian, publisher and book wholesaler specialising on the Australian Alps and Canberra. Skiing for him started at Thredbo in 1958 and walking in 1967 with a skyline traverse from Mt Kosciusko to Mt Jagungal. The producer of numerous articles and books, he is often consulted for his knowledge of the high country. His efforts to preserve the mountain huts and record their history have been rewarded Life Membership of the Kosciusko Huts Association. A strong supporter of the national parks movement he is also a Life Member of the National Parks and Wildlife Foundation. He enjoys the mountains when he can, with a growing preference for the warmth of summer.
