Edited by TM Devine and Rosalind Mitchison
Produced in assocations with The Economic and Social History Society of Scotland, this is one of the most exciting publishing ventures for many years. It is the first of three volumes which will provide a definitive survey of Scottish social change and development from the eighteenth century to the present day. It is designed to have a wide appeal from advanced classes at secondary school through to final year courses at University, and of course members of the general public seeking an authoritative social history will find it ideal. It is a history of Scotland as a society experiencing industrailisation and urbanisation in all its aspects and it takes the impact of these process over their widest range from croft, bothy and hunting lodge to mines, foundries and urban poor houses. The volumes create an awareness of indentity and distinctiveness of Scotland and recognise it as a mult-cultured society, the highland and lowland cultures being only the major ones among several. The freshness and detail of recent research within the broader structure are stressed and the series presents an up-to-date picture of the 'state of the art'.
