This is the last volume of a three-volume eighteenth century to the present day. It is designed to have a wide appeal from advanced classes at secondary school through to final public seeking an authoritative social history of Scotland.

The series covers the history of industrialisation and urbanisatin in Scottish society and records many of the experiences which Scotland shared with other European societies. Throughout the volumes emphasis is also placed upon the particular identity and distinctiveness of the country in terms both of its institutions and the social values of the Scottish people. At the same time care is taken to highlight the significance of those regional and cultural differences that existed within Scotland.
