James Bonwick, a teacher, author, historian and archivist, was born in 1817 at Lingfield, Surrey, the son of a carpenter.

The book is divided into five parts:

  • His early life: at the Old Boro' Road Boys' School, his further training and teaching at Leicester, Ipswich and Hemel Hempstead, Bexley and Liverpool, his marriage in 1840 and transition from England to the Normal School in Hobart, Tasmania in 1841
  • Life in Australia: Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland as a teacher, gold digger, inspector, and author
  • His "retirement" in England: worked as a Labour Agent for Emigration - about this time he produced his "Resources of Queensland
