Product Description

Book

A vast amount of occupational information of interest to genealogists is available in print. There are innumerable biographical dictionaries, descriptions of archives, record publications, lists of the members of professional societies, trade directories, genealogical guides, etc. A11 of these help us to identify people in the past, and may provide essential clues to tracing our family trees. The purpose of this bibliography is to draw these publications to the attention of genealogists. Arrangement is alphabetical by occupation; some general works are also included under headings such as "Business records" and 'Trade union records'. The place of publication is London, except where otherwise indicated.

The term 'occupation' in the title of this bibliography has been interpreted broadly to include status as well. Hence titles relating to annuitants, book collectors, insurance policy holders, etc., have been included. In general, I have excluded works which are international in scope. I have also excluded works relating to occupations in a particular place; these are listed in the relevant county volumes of my British genealogical bibliographies series (see back cover). The number of works dealing with occupations in London is sufficiently large to warrant a separate book. London was (and still is) a magnet attracting workers from throughout Britain, and, even if you think you do not have London ancestors, you should still consult: Raymond, Stuart. Londoners' occupations: a genealogical guide.
