Detailed descriptions, maps, and illustrations of English, Irish, and Scottish locales as they existed in the 19th century; Political, physical, and historical features of the all locales, from the largest counties to the smallest villages; Images of the pages of eight volumes by Samuel Lewis.

Originally prepared by Samuel Lewis, the gazetteers reproduced on this Family Archive contain detailed information on English, Irish, and Scottish locales as they existed in the mid-1800s. A gazetteer is a topographical (or geographical) dictionary in which a location's political and physical features are defined. For example, for a location listed you may learn information on local industry, nearby towns, population, and primary landholders.

Completely indexed by place name, this Family Archive makes finding information on your ancestral homelands easier than ever. For family historians, the key advantage of these gazetteers is that even the most obscure villages are generally identified in relation to a parish or perhaps specific church. These churches were and remain major repositories of primary sources for ancestral vital records. Apart their genealogical value, the dictionaries are fascinating and illuminating works in themselves. They bring to life ancestral homes and villages that until now may have existed in name alone or family lore and tradition, perhaps on the other side of the globe. You need the Family Archive Viewer either version 3.02 or higher to use this CD. You can download the FAV from http://genealogy.com
