As awareness of the role of Friendly Societies in the 19th century has developed, so has an appreciation of the value of records which can provide family historians with the opportunity to supplement better known sources to extend their knowledge of their forefathers' lives.
In England alone it has been estimated that by 1803 some 38% of all families were connected to a Friendly Society. This level varied from 79% in Lancashire to 10% in Hampshire.
