Product Description

Book

Why did they leave?

Why did shiploads of Germans, Danes, Norwegians, Swedes and some Swiss come to Tasmania in the 1850s-1880s?

Who recruited them?

Read the story of the agents, inducements and journeys.

What attracted them?

The book outlines the schemes used by the Government Agents to encourage people to leave Northern Europe.

Was your ancestor one of the recruits to Tasmania? Wilhelm Kirchner, Frederick Buck and others recruited people to become agricultural labourers, mechanics, servants and small farmers in Tasmania. Many left the islands within a few years and went to other Australian colonies. Their age, religion, literacy, native place (If recorded) and trade or occupation as well as the name of their first employer have been complied from various sources into a single easy to follow source.
