INDEXES TO THE NEW SOUTH WALES CONVICTS AND THE SHIPS THAT TRANSPORTED THEM
BACKGROUND
The Genealogical Society of Victoria undertook, with the agreement of the State Records Authority of New South Wales, to compile a complete index to convict arrivals to NSW between 1788 and 1842. This index contains more than 124,000 names and aliases. At the same time a simple index to the ships that transported the convicts was built. The indexes are intended to complement the microfiche of convict indentures (Indents) which have been produced by the State Records Authority of New South Wales as part of their Genealogical Research Kit. Finding the name of an ancestor in this index will enable a researcher to find other sources which will reveal details about the convict.
THE INDEX OF NAMES AND ALIASES
The major index is a searchable data base of more than 124,000 records of the names and aliases of the convicts who arrived in New South Wales and some in Van Diemen's Land between 1788 and 1842. Each record on the data base contains the convict's name or alias, the ship on which he or she arrived and the date, and a reference to the relevant fiche and film that contains the original data. The surname, given name(s), ship and date are fully searchable. Each, except the date is also searchable using Soundex code
The second index is of the ships recorded on the same documents - those ships that transported the convicts. This is intended as an aid for researchers with a wider interest than following the one convict.
