The CD is an amalgamation of indexes to records of the following eight hospitals.

They are all admission records, except that which we have called the Kyneton Hospital Family record:

Amherst Hospital 1869-1888

Ballarat Hospital 1856-1913

Castlemaine Hospital 1855-1920

Castlemaine Benevolent Asylum 1860-1922

Creswick Hospital outpatients 1873-1877

Creswick Hospital 1883-1894

Dunolly Hospital 1860-1900

Kyneton Hospital Admissions Register 1862-1885

Kyneton Hospital Family Record 1869-1884

Maldon Hospital 1864-1905

Maryborough Hospital 1855-1907

The index comprises ten fields of information: surname; given name(s); admission date; age of patient; patient's place of birth; whether single, married or widowed; occupation; residence; and source.

Various additional information is contained in the records.

Amherst Hospital 1869-1888

The full index contains the following fields: name; residence; occupation; marital status: single, married or widowed; age, admission date; discharge date; religion, father's name; mother's name; and remarks. Note that not all fields are fully filled in.

The original documents are held by the Talbot Museum (Camp St, Talbot, Victoria 3371) but may not be viewed because of their fragility. Like many small societies the Talbot Museum has a good collection of historical information about it's history and provides a research service.

Ballarat Hospital 1856-1913

The full index contains the following fields: name; age; sex; residence; occupation; religion; admission date; discharge date; birth place; time in Victoria; and who recommended the admission. Most fields are fully filled in. The original records are held by the hospital. The full index is published on fiche and is available from the GSV bookshop, and for research in the library.

The Castlemaine District Hospital 1855-1920

The first Castlemaine District Hospital located in Gingell Street was opened on 24 May 1853. A New Hospital building was erected in Halford St and opened on 16 December 1939, operating today as the Acute Division of Mt Alexander Hospital. On 1 July 1986 it amalgamated with the Mt Alexander Hospital.

The admissions register contains the following information: registration number; surname; given name(s); admission date; age of patient; patient's place of birth; marital status: single, married or widowed; occupation; residence; religion; disease; result; discharge date; and by whom admission was recommended. Most of the fields in the register were fully filled in.

The original records are held by the Mt Alexander Hospital and a fiche copy of them is available for research in the GSV library. Note that the records for the period 1862-1868 are incomplete.

The Castlemaine Benevolent Asylum 1860-1922

The Asylum was located in Cornish St and opened on 4 July 1860. The name was changed to Alexander in 1955. The original building is still in use as the Extended Care Division of the Mt Alexander Hospital.

The admissions register has provision for the following information: registration number; surname; given name(s); admission date; age of patient; patient's place of birth; marital status: single, married or widowed; occupation; parents' names; issue; residence; religion; ground of admission; year of arrival in the colony; discharge date. Several of the fields in the register were often not filled in.

Creswick Hospital 1863-1882

The full index was prepared by E Wickham and R Huggins from the original document held at the Public Record Office's Ballarat branch.

The full index contains the following fields: admission date; name; residence; age; occupation; marital status: single, married or widowed; place of birth; religion; time in Victoria; the result of treatment; and discharge date. Most fields are fully filled in. A copy of the full index is held by the GSV

Creswick Hospital Outpatients 1873-1877

The full index contains the following fields: name; residence; marital status: single, married or widowed; age; admission date; and where born. These fields are all that are available. The field provided to record where the patient was born is mostly blank, while all other fields are nearly fully filled in. The whereabouts of the original document are unknown.

Creswick Hospital 1883-1894

The full index contains the following fields: name; birthplace; age; residence; occupation; marital status: single, married or widowed; admission date; discharge date; the result of treatment; the time in the colony; religion; and by whom recommended. Just a few fields are incompletely filled in. The full index is held at the GSV. The whereabouts of the original document are unknown.

Dunolly Hospital 1860-1900

The full index contains the following fields: name; residence; occupation; marital status: single, married or widowed; admission date; discharge date; age; result of treatment; religion; place of birth; year of birth; ship on which the patient travelled to Australia; how many years in the colony; and place of departure for Australia. Note that not all these fields are fully filled in. A fiche copy of the full index is available from the GSV bookshop and available for research in the GSV library. The whereabouts of the original document is unknown.

Kyneton Hospital Admissions Register 1862 - 1885

This index was built from two records containing admissions of In-Patients and Out-Patients.

The In-Patients' register contains the following fields: Number; Age; Name; Country (of birth); Trade; Disease; Date of Admission; Number of days in hospital; Result; Where last resident; Religious Denomination; Date of Discharge; and By Whom Recommended. Some of the register's fields are not fully filled in. The Out-Patients; register contains the following fields: Number; Age; Name; Disease; Country (of birth); Religion; Address; Recommender; and Remarks (which contains a date).

Kyneton Hospital Family Record 1869-1884

This is an unusual record. We believe it was created as a comprehensive record of the patient's kin. It lacks any date, but it contains much information of genealogical value. The fields are headed: Number; Name; Where Born; Lived in Colony of Victoria; Other Colonies; Father's Name and Business; Mother's Maiden name and Christian Name; When married; To whom married; Name of Children (usually including the child's age). In the majority of cases all the applicable fields are filled in.

Each name in this Family Record has been indexed, and a full index is held at the GSV. The Goldfields Hospital index includes every name in the document.

Fortunately the document's time frame largely coincides with the other document we have (Kyneton Admissions) and this was used to infer dates in the Family Record document. The date field is therefore the conclusion of the indexers and sometimes contains information when no date can be confidently inferred.

"No Hosp Rec" and "No Hospital Record of date" indicates that no plausible correlation can be made between the two records so no date information can be inferred.

"No Rec1879" indicates that the year is probably 1879 but no month or day can be inferred.

Maldon Hospital 1864-1905

The register was indexed by Elisabeth and Raymond G Allan. The whereabouts of it is unknown.

The full index contains the following fields: name; residence; marital status single, married or widowed; admission date; discharge date; result of treatment; religion; birthplace; age; ship on which the patient travelled to Australia; how many years in the colony; and port of departure for Australia. Note that not all fields are fully filled in. The full index is available from the GSV bookshop and is in the library for research.

Maryborough Hospital 1855-1907

The register was indexed by Elisabeth and Raymond G Allan. The whereabouts of it is unknown.

The full index contains the following fields: name; admission date; discharge date; if died, the date of death; age; occupation; residence; time in colony; marital status: single, married or widowed; religion; place of birth; ship on which the patient travelled to Australia; how many years in the colony; and port of departure for Australia.
