The first part of the book begins with the story of how childbirth was conducted in the C17th and C18th at a time of political and religious upheaval in EnglandPart two of this book is based on the Midwives Nominations of Yorkshire from 1662-1732, during which time midwives applied to the diocesan authorities for a licence to practice their art. The women of the parish who had been safely delivered by the particular midwife often signed these nominations or requests for licences. From the 304 documents in the collection the author has transcribed and indexed over 2000 names of midwives, childbearing women, medical men and ministers of religion.
