Originally published in 1882, this book examines the history of Queensland from 1770 to the separation of the Moreton Bay District from New South Wales and its constitution as a separate colony in December 1859.

The author considers Queensland's history in twelve timespans:

  • 1770-1824: Voyages by Cook, Flinders and Oxley
  • 1824-1839: The period of penal establishments, voyages of discovery by Cunningham and Logan, the establishment of the Moravian Mission to the Aborigines by Dr Lang, a visit by Backhouse and Walker and finally the withdrawal of the prisoners and preparation for a free settlement
  • 1839-1843: a look at Brisbane at the termination of the convict era
  • 1843-1846: passage of the Preferable Liens Act, invention of the boiling down process and Leichhardt's exploratory expedition to Port Essington
  • 1846-1849: proposal of a new colony for reformed convicts at Port Curtis, exploratory expeditions by Mitchell, Kennedy and Leichhardt, establishment of the Courts of Petty Sessions
  • 1848-1850: proposed constitution for New South Wales, Dr Lang and his emigration plans, the arrival of the "Fortitude", "Chasely
