In a letter to the general public, author Richard Osburne describes this book as: ‘a record which would give the names of the pioneers, and as far as possible detail the movements and doings of those who, for the most part, at the expenditure of great personal toil and indomitable perseverance, and of others in the laying out of solid cash, converted from the wilderness those famous lands and prolific broad acres which are now so celebrated throughout the colony of Victoria.’

What he produced was the History of Warrnambool: from the first Government land sales in 1847 to the end of 1886. Osburne describes in detail forty years of settlement, trade, religion, education, sports, associations, government, statistics and people in the town of Warrnambool from his point of view as a man connected with nearly all the public movements of the town - social, political, and religious - from 1847 up to 1882.
