'The History of Ballarat' is an interesting and comprehensive book written by William Withers in 1887.
The author saw first-hand, the growth of Ballarat from before the gold era and is therefore able to present an interesting and accurate view of the history of the region from its earliest days through the gold era to the date of publication. This second edition of 'The History of Ballarat' was written 17 years after the first edition and consequently includes a reasonable amount of additional information.
Included in the book is chapters on before the gold discovery, the gold discovery, from the gold discovery to the Eureka Stockade, digger hunting, the Eureka Stockade, political development, mining and the town of Ballarat. It also includes several drawings by S.T. Gill as well as maps, plans and copies of original documents.
This is an interesting and useful book on the history of Ballarat, particularly for those interested in the history of the region or on the history of gold in Australia.
