This is a book that will be enjoyed by anyone who has a love for Cornwall, her people and her history. Despite the renown of so many of the ancient Cornish families, no modern book exists to tell their story. Indeed it was that great Cornish man of letters Dr A. L. Rowse who was instrumental in persuading the author to undertake the writing of this book. Twenty-two of the great Cornish families are each given a chapter in the book, and their story is told from their, often humble, beginnings, through to their days of greatness, whether in politics, industry or the arts. Here too is the story of the great houses they built, and the contributions each family made to ;the culture and economy of the county. Some of the families are now lost to history, but their legacy remains. Other families are still flourishing and continue to play an active role in the life of Cornwall and figure on the national and international stage. Many of the families share in some past scandal and notoriety and the author reveals that skeletons lurk in the cupboards of many a great house. The tales of these black sheep make up the rich and entertaining pages of this work and reveal the variety of character that give the ancient lineage of Cornwall's families their special place in history.
