Since its first publication in 1979, this polemical and original book has remained in demand both among academics and those with a general interest in this region of Scotland. It is still the only book-length study of agricultural change in a lowland area of the country. This scholarly book employs an unusual combination of history and sociology, and the author's approach to his subject is avowedly and unashamedly political. One of the advantages of new technology is that it enables hard-to-find books to be made available again. We are pleased to present the first fruits of exploring John Donald's classic backlist of academic titles. Not only do we hope to add more titles to the list but look forward to bringing in other titles suitable for this system as time goes on. 'This excellent, scholarly, eminently readable book deals with one of the most interesting agrarian societies in the United Kingdom.'- T C Smout, Social History
