In 1844 Ludwig Leichardt led his first expedition to Port Essington in the Northern Territory. He departed from Darling Downs in Queensland in October and reaching his destination in December 1845. The party crossed vast areas of previously unexplored territory and skirted the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria. At one point they were given up for lost. Their surprise reappearance caused a national sensation. Following this expedition, Leichardt became famous within the Australian colonies and in Europe.
Complete with details of the route traveled, and what they saw, this publication recounts the journey of Leichhardt and his party over part of Australia's amazing landscape.
