Wickham: Gervasoni & D'Angri

From the gloom of the vault in the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery the Eureka Flag has emerged as an icon of national significance. This remnant of the Eureka Stockade has engendered much research and comment. Val D'Angri, while conserving the Eureka Flag in 1973, discovered that her ancestor, in all probability, stitched it over a century before. Val's work on the flag initiated a passionate interest shared by her husband, Norm D'Angri. Their thoughts, comments and drawings show a first hand knowledge of the flag, and are fascinating in detail.

A great many people are to be congratulated for their huge commitment that prompted the conservation of the Eureka Flag. It is hoped the immeasurable hours of research and the intimate knowledge of the flag, generously shared in the pages of this book, will foster further interest.

Is the flag in the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery the actual flag that was flown at the Stockade in 1854? Was there more than one flag? What were the dimensions of the original flag? Why were eight pointed stars used in the design? Who designed and sewed the original flag? These and other questions are considered int he following pages. The verdict is up to you!
