Product Description

CD record

"1752 marked the initiation of the expansion of Edinburgh from old medieval burgh into the neo-classical New Town. James Gilhooley, by researching in a variety of archives, here presents a complete directory for 1752 in a form which allows considerable analysis of the social structure of the time" extract from book cover.

The majority of information used in compiling this directory has been drawn from the Window and Annuity tax rolls. The population statistics have been mathematically derived from the Bills of Mortality published in the Scots magazine between 1740 and 1756.

There are three directories included, arranged by surname, address and occupation.

A facsimile of Edgar's 1746 map of Edinburgh is included, along with a chart of the streets, closes, wynds, and lands in the Old Town.
