Thomas Bracken (1843-1898), the son of Thomas and Margaret (Kernan) lies beneath an imposing monument in the southern cemetery in Dunedin which was erected by subscription from friends and the general public to mark his life as 'poet, journalist, legislator' in his adopted country.

remained important in Bracken's memory, it was at Bendigo he was an unsuccessful gold digger, and there he wrote and published this book.
