Axedale Cemetery Information:

1. First unconfirmed burial - George BYWATER who died in 1865.

2. First confirmed burial - Margaret HENNESSY who died 04/05/1867.

3. First confirmed R/C burial - Margaret CONROY who died 30/09/1867.

4. First confirmed Non Cath. burial - Edward AVERY who died 02/04/1868.

The cemetery is divided into 2 sections, Non Catholic (Protestant) & Roman Catholic, the Catholic area being fenced off from the other by a dry rock wall.

There is a register of sorts for the Non Catholic Section starting in 1865. Copies are held by the Bendigo Cemetery Trust, & the AIGS Bendigo Area branch. It is not known how complete it is.

The Sexton's office was burnt in the early 1900's and many original cemetery records were lost.

Goornong Cemetery Information:

This burial list contains headstone and grave photos with inscription notes for hard to read headstones.

The first burial at Goornong was Thomas Strode aged 70 years. He came from Muskerry and was buried on the 4th Aug 1884.

Since then, there have been 469 burials at the Goornong Cemetery as of 11 Aug 2007.

Thomas Robertson, a well known local gentleman, who built Campaspe Park, drowned in the Campaspe River. He was buried in the Goornong Cemetery on 23 Dec 1891.

The Queens Council Sir Eugene Gorman who died at age 72 years, instructed he be buried at Goornong. He was buried on 30th Aug 1973.

Goornong is located on the Midland Hwy, 20 kms north of Bendigo. The cemetery is situated off the Midland Hwy, on the Goornong-Barnadown Road, set in a bush/rural setting.
