November 1880 saw the deaths of Ned Kelly and Redmond Barry, and the arrival in Victoria of Englishwoman Helen Hart. While the names of the first two have lived on in history, the third is unknown today. Yet Hart was extremely well-known in her day, and at her death in 1908 more than thirty-five newspapers published obituaries. She claimed to be the founder of the women's suffrage movement in Australasia. This book examines Hart's background and details her activities during her time in Australia. It is the result of long and wide-ranging research. Helen D. Harris has an MA in history and has worked as a genealogist and historian for more than 25 years. In 1993 she was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to community history, and in 2004 the inaugural VAFHO Frances Brown Award for services to family history. She lives in Box Hill with her husband, Gary Presland.
